An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Job That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a big ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we picked up meals, found a table, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I should apply for a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
