British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
