EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
