Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
